Being discipline is part of your identity

Have you realised this mindset shift?

Your belief about discipline will determine how disciplined you actually are

Hi Woman of God

Happy new week!

Today I started a new fitness routine and diet plan to reach my body goals this summer and it got me thinking about a mindset shift that I started embracing which changed my entire perspective on discipline.

This mindset shift is to think of discipline as part of your identity, instead of thinking of it as something unnatural that you are forcing yourself to do.

For example, instead of saying "I will try to exercise," say "I am someone who exercises regularly."

It is such a small shift but it now makes your disciplined actions a part of your nature and therefore they flow out of you. We as human beings will always default back to actions and habits that we consider to be part of our identity, and therefore this shift will allow you to remain disciplined.

As Christian women particularly, embracing discipline is not merely about adhering to rules or routines but about embodying the character of God in our daily lives.

In Romans 12:2, we are reminded, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." This transformation speaks to a profound identity shift. When we align our actions and habits with our identity in Christ, discipline becomes a natural outflow of who we are rather than a burdensome task.

God has called us to be diligent, purposeful, and steadfast. Proverbs 31:17 describes the virtuous woman as one who "sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks." This strength is not merely physical but is deeply rooted in a disciplined spirit. As we embrace discipline as part of our God-given identity, we reflect His nature.

Walking in this truth requires mindfulness and a conscious effort to live out our identity daily. Here are a few ways we can integrate this mindset shift into our lives:

  1. Affirm Our Identity in Christ: Start each day by reminding yourself of who you are in Christ. Affirmations rooted in Scripture can help reinforce this truth.

  2. Set Intentional Goals: Align your daily tasks and long-term goals with God’s purpose for your life. Discipline becomes more meaningful when it is connected to your divine calling.

  3. Rely on God’s Strength: Remember that we are not alone in our efforts. Philippians 4:13 assures us, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Depend on His strength to maintain discipline, especially when challenges arise.

  4. Seek Accountability: Surround yourself with fellow believers who can encourage and support you. Accountability partners can help you stay focused and committed to your disciplined practices.

  5. Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate your growth in discipline, no matter how small. Each step forward is a testament to God’s work in you.

Let us be mindful of our new identity in Christ and walk confidently in it, knowing that as we cultivate discipline, we are not just enhancing our lives but we are reflecting the nature of God that is now within us as His children, and we also are glorifying God through our obedience and dedication.

May we continually strive to reflect His character in all that we do.
