The Proverbs Challenge Day 4 - Chapter 4

Hi, Woman of God

Welcome to Day 4 of the Challenge!Today was the first day so far of the Challenge that I had to FIGHT to find time to dive into Proverbs. Between working, house admin and life admin the day got hectic QUICKLY. But I'm sooo grateful that I managed to make time because this has been my favourite chapter so far.It might not always be easy to make time to slow down and sit with God's Word, but wow is it always rewarding. Below you'll see my study notes for today's chapter using the S.O.A.P method. The key themes that stood out to me were around fatherhood and what we allow into our hearts. Let's dive in!

SCRIPTURE

Proverbs Chapter 2 verses 1 and 23.

OBSERVATION

Verse 1Right from the jump, the writer of Proverbs, King Solomon, talks about how his father taught him when he was young and showed him the ways of wisdom from early. Similarly, he is now passing this wisdom to his children by teaching what he was also taught. This demonstrated to me the value of having a good father in your life and why the enemy is attacking men and their position as the father in so many homes/families/lives of children. It’s sad that most of my friends come from single parent homes and/or don’t have a relationship with their father - only God knows the effect this can have on children as they grow into adults. Yet in His perfect love God has become a Father to the fatherless and has given himself as the ultimate Father to all of us. Praise be to God, the most loving One.Verse 23I can’t read chapter 4 of proverbs without stopping at the famous verse 23. One of my favourites in the whole of proverbs. This word is so clear about how everything in our lives stem from what we allow into our hearts. This verse changed my relationship with media and how seriously I protect my mind. The earlier verses (v20-21) reference ears, eyes, attention/mind. This reveals to me that what we consume through our senses on a regular basis will influence the direction of our lives.

APPLICATION

Verse 1Concerning the importance of fathers, I will pray often over the men in my life and men as a whole, that God would be the centre of their lives so that they can be an extension of Him in their homes and a father who teaches and guides our children in wisdom and love. I will also pray for us as women that we choose our men well, knowing that we not only choose husbands but fathers who will lead our families. May we choose well! Verse 23I will plan to obey this verse in 3 ways:

  1. Firstly, in the company I keep, I will be mindful of the people I surround myself with on a regular basis. I will seek to form relationships with more people who think and speak in alignment with the word of God.

  2. Secondly, I will continue to be intentional about the music, movies and media I consume, to ensure that it aligns with my Christian values. As God’s word says in Philippians 4:8 “whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”

  3. Thirdly, I will continue reading the word of God to cleanse my mindset of old ways and renew my mindset to God’s ways. The Ultimate Glow Up!

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank you for being a loving Father to me. I pray for fresh fire in the hearts of man, that fathers and future fathers will be men after your own heart. I pray for families to remain united under Christ. I rebuke, by the power of God, the plans of the enemy to destroy the ordained institution of family. I pray that more believers rise up in defence of Your Truth, Lord. I pray that You help me to do my part each day. Give me a continued desire for what pleases You, and turn my heart away from the things that do not serve me on my walk with You. All this I pray in Your holy name, Jesus. Amen
