The Proverbs Challenge - Day 19

One of the verses that caught my eye today was a good one. Ready to dive in?

SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 19:22
“What is desired in a man is kindness, and a poor man is better than a liar.”

OBSERVATION

The word "kindness" in this verse is rendered as "steadfast love" or "faithfulness" in some translations, but the emphasis remains on the quality of character that makes a man admirable. This virtue, kindness, stood out to me particularly in the context of relationships, especially for women choosing a life partner.

It goes without saying that the man should be a man of God, first and foremost - but his kindness toward you is critical. Unfortunately. it is not always a given that he will have this virtue towards you even as a Christian man. So during the courting stage you must be considering this. If a man lacks kindness, it’s a red flag that the lack of kindness will likely continue or worsen in marriage. Kindness is not just a “nice-to-have”; it signals many deeper things about a man:

• Care: A kind man will care for you and any future children.

• Protection: He will honor you and protect your well-being.

• Leadership: He will lead in love, modeling Christ’s love for the Church.

This verse reminds us that kindness is the highest virtue because it reflects God’s character and is essential in building a strong and loving relationship. Women should ensure that the man they choose embodies this quality, as it speaks to his ability to create a loving and secure family environment.

The second half of this verse - “a poor man is better than a liar“ - by contrast, highlights 2 traits that are typically not desired in a man - poverty and lying. Yet, it states that the former is better than the latter. It is clear to me here that a man who is a liar will destroy his home, and ultimately there is better chance for a man who is poor. If, for whatever terrible reason you had to choose between the two - now you know.

APPLICATION

• I will reflect on the relationships in my life, ensuring that kindness is a consistent quality I seek and cherish in others, especially in those I allow into close and influential positions.

• I will encourage the single women in my community to prioritise kindness and godly character when choosing a partner, understanding its importance for a healthy and loving relationship.

• I will also examine my own actions to ensure that I, too, demonstrate kindness in all my relationships, knowing it reflects God’s love.

PRAYER

Lord God, thank You for showing us the importance of kindness through Your word. I pray for discernment for every woman seeking a godly partner to prioritise the character of kindness. Help us to be people who reflect Your love and demonstrate kindness ourselves in our relationships. For those who are married, I pray for kindness to reign in their homes, creating environments of care, protection, and love. Teach me, Lord, to lead with kindness in my own life, just as You lead us with steadfast love. In Jesus’ name, amen. 🩷
