The Proverbs Challenge - Day 5
the consequences of adultery vs the protection of marriage
Hi Woman of God
I am so blessed to hear how this challenge is already such a blessing to so many of us - and we’re just getting started! Please continue to share your testimonies with me as we go through, I can’t wait to hear how God encounters us during our study of His Word.
Let’s dive in to chapter 5 - a full one!
SCRIPTURE
Proverbs 5 - verses 1-14 warns about the consequences of adultery, verses 15-20 celebrate the joys of staying faithful in marriage, and verse 21 reminds us that God sees everything and knows the best path for us.
OBSERVATION
Verses 1-14:
These verses really hit home about how dangerous adultery is. Intrinsically, we all know it’s wrong, whether we’re Christians or not. But here, the Word goes into detail about just how costly it is. Adultery might seem sweet at first, but it leads to losing:
Your honour (v. 9)
The best years of your life (v. 9)
Your wealth (v. 10)
Everything you’ve worked so hard to achieve (v. 10)
The world we live in often makes adultery look exciting and harmless, but that’s far from the truth. These verses make it clear that it causes damage on every level - spiritual, emotional, and even physical. God wants us to see the bigger picture and not get caught in the same traps others have fallen into.
Even with the havoc that one suffers when they fall into this trap, God is still a restorer to those who truly repent. He forgives and helps us rebuild. King David is an example of this. His sins of adultery and murder were massive, and he surely suffered for them, but when he repented, God forgave him and restored his relationship with Him. David went on to be called “the anointed of the God of Jacob” (2 Samuel 23:1).
That said, God’s ideal for us is to avoid these sins in the first place so we don’t have to deal with the pain and fallout they bring. He gives us wisdom so we can see through temptation and make wise choices. With God’s help, we can stand strong and avoid the traps of immorality. Thank God for giving us the wisdom to stay on the right path!
Verses 15-20:
After the warnings about adultery, we’re shown a much better option: finding joy in your own marriage. The verse about “rejoicing with the wife of your youth” paints such a beautiful picture of love and faithfulness. Staying committed to your spouse not only protects you from heartache but also brings so much blessing and joy. There’s also a little reminder here about marrying wisely and appreciating your partner from a young age so you can enjoy a lifetime together.
Verse 21:
This verse brings it all together: “For your ways are in full view of the Lord, and He examines all your paths.” God sees everything we do and knows exactly where each choice will lead. He’s seen it all through history and knows the outcome of every decision we could possibly make. Trusting God means recognising that His wisdom is far greater than ours and that His way is always the best way.
APPLICATION
I will keep praying for wisdom to spot and avoid the traps of temptation, especially in a world that glamourises adultery, fornication, and sexual sin. I’ll be intentional about sharing God’s wisdom on these matters so that more people can be set free from the enemy’s lies. At the same time, I will focus on the beauty and blessing of a God-centred marriage, praying for God’s help to stay faithful and to support others in building strong relationships. Above all, I will surrender my plans and desires to God, trusting His wisdom over my own. I’ll seek guidance through His Word, knowing that He always knows what’s best for me.
PRAYER
Father, thank You for the practical wisdom in this chapter. Help me to choose Your way in every part of my life, especially when it comes to relationships and purity. Give me the strength to resist temptation and the grace to walk in Your truth. I pray for those who’ve fallen, that they’ll experience Your forgiveness and restoration. Teach me to value Your wisdom and share it with others. Thank You for Your endless grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
See you tomorrow for Day 6 sister ✨
With my love
