The Proverbs Challenge - Day 8
The excellence of Wisdom - and why you need 'her'
Hi Woman of God
I hope you had a fantastic Sunday! I spent an active afternoon at church, preparing the kids' ministry for the upcoming Christmas play. We cast all the Marys, Josephs, and Wise Men, and it’s shaping up to be an incredible performance next weekend! Later, I had a cosy movie night with my best friend - something we rarely get to do, so it felt extra special.
As I sat down to study Proverbs 8, I was immediately reminded of my primary focus in this season of my life which is to grow as a woman of wisdom - specifically, the wisdom of God. Let’s dive into this chapter together.
SCRIPTURE
Proverbs Chapter 8 (the chapter as a whole)
OBSERVATION
This whole chapter reveals the excellence of wisdom and seeks to inspire the reader to pursue it above all else. Wisdom is personified as a noble, accessible, and transformative gift from God, one that has the power to enrich every area of life.
Wisdom does not only teach us how to gain wealth and riches righteously, to care for our families and serve our communities, but also brings love, safety, honour, purpose, peace, health, righteousness, joy, strength, and much more (v14).
This chapter challenges all our earthly desires and reduces them to mediocre when compared to the pursuit of wisdom. It reveals that choosing to pursue God’s wisdom is the greatest decision one can make.
Here are some of the specific benefits and qualities of wisdom outlined in this chapter:
She speaks excellent things and is always right (v6).
Her words are true and righteous, with no wickedness (v7-8).
Knowing wisdom is worth more than silver, gold, and rubies; no wealth can compare (v10-11).
Having wisdom is to possess understanding and strength (v14).
Through wisdom, kings reign, and rulers lead justly (v15-16).
Wisdom brings riches that come with honour and are enduring, not fleeting (v18).
Loving wisdom enriches every area of life and fills treasuries abundantly (v21).
Finding wisdom is finding life itself and favour with God (v35).
Rejecting wisdom is choosing death and harming one’s own soul (v36).
The chapter concludes with a beautiful depiction of wisdom as a master craftsman who was with God at the creation of the world (v22-31). This imagery portrays wisdom as essential to the beauty and order of God’s design. I see wisdom extending her hand to us, offering to teach, transform, and help us craft beautiful, God-aligned lives.
A reader who embraces this chapter will undoubtedly leave with a deeper hunger for wisdom, recognising it as the key to unlocking God’s promises and His will for our lives.
APPLICATION
I will never tire of seeking and praying for God’s wisdom. By His grace, I will ensure that my desires are aligned with the wisdom of God and not the fleeting values of the world. This means evaluating my daily decisions and ensuring they reflect God’s principles rather than my personal preferences.
Additionally, I will make space for wisdom to shape my relationships, work, and priorities, recognising that wisdom is the key to living a life that glorifies God. I will also encourage others, especially those caught up in pursuing worldly goals, to see the value of wisdom and to turn to God for guidance and direction.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing the excellence of wisdom through this chapter. Thank You for the reminder that wisdom is not hidden but freely available to all who seek it. Lord, I ask that You fill me with Your wisdom and guide my decisions each day. May I always treasure Your wisdom above earthly riches and desires. I pray for all your people, that they too would hunger for Your wisdom and recognise it as the key to a life of joy, purpose, and abundance. Thank You for making wisdom an eternal companion in our journey. In Jesus’ name, Amen 🩷
See you tomorrow for Day 9 sister ✨
