The Proverbs Challenge - Day 17
God as your Father + Picking The Man or The Bear?
Hi Woman of God
Welcome to day 17 of our proverbs challenge!
SCRIPTURE
Proverbs Chapter 17, Verses 6 and 12
Verse 6: "Grandchildren are the crown of old men, And the glory of children is their father."
Verse 12: "Let a man meet a bear robbed of her cubs, Rather than a fool in his folly."
OBSERVATION
Two verses stood out to me today.
Verse 6: This verse is so rich in wisdom. It first highlights the beauty of legacy - bringing generations into this world after you, describing grandchildren as a crown and a symbol of honour is really powerful. However, it’s the second half of the verse that truly caught my heart: "The glory of children is their father." There is no doubt that a father’s character, reputation, and presence impacts his children in many ways. Yet, what deeply moves me about this verse is the spiritual truth it reveals: as children of God, He is our Father, and He is our glory.
Regardless of what earthly family we come from - whether we’ve had strong, loving fathers or absent, imperfect ones - God Himself steps in as our perfect Father. Through Him, we find our worth, our honour, and our confidence. People may wonder, “Who is her father?” and we can boldly answer, “My Father is the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords!” That identity changes everything. It anchors us, strengthens us, and gives us a glory that cannot be taken away. Knowing this fills me with so much joy and confidence - what greater glory can there be than to be called a child of the Most High God?
Verse 12: This verse made me chuckle because it reminded me of the trend where women are asked whether they’d rather face a bear or a man in the woods. I wonder if this is actually where the trend arose from, lol! Many women answer the bear, saying men are scarier—haha! As wild as that sounds, this verse seems to support the statement: "Let a man meet a bear robbed of her cubs, rather than a fool in his folly." Solomon is telling us that a fool in their foolishness is more dangerous than an enraged bear. Think about that! A bear robbed of her cubs is unpredictable, ferocious, and deadly, yet a fool (male or female) is even worse. This is a warning for us to stay far away from foolish people and to guard our own hearts against foolishness.
APPLICATION
For Verse 6: I will continue to meditate on the truth that God is my Father and my glory. I will remind myself daily that my identity, confidence, and honor come from being His child. Whenever I feel unworthy or question my value, I will reject those lies and instead proclaim the truth of WHOSE I am. God’s glory covers me, and I am proud to call Him Father.
For Verse 12: I will be intentional about avoiding foolish company that can bring harm, distraction, or negativity into my life. I will also examine my own heart and decisions to ensure I am walking in wisdom and not behaving foolishly. God calls me to walk in His wisdom, and I will take this seriously in my daily actions and relationships.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for being my perfect Father and my glory. Thank You that my identity, worth, and confidence are secure in You. I praise You because You are a Father to the fatherless, and You crown us with Your love and righteousness. Lord, help me to walk in the wisdom You have given me and keep me far from foolishness. Give me discernment to recognise foolish influences and the strength to avoid them. May I honor You with my life and leave a legacy that brings glory to You. In Jesus’ mighty name I pray, Amen. 🩷
