The Proverbs Challenge - Day 21

Happy Saturday! I said yesterday was one of my favourite days of the challenge so far, but I felt the exact same way today (once I pushed past the natural tendency of the flesh to not want to be productive). It’s amazing how when you decide to open your Bible, even when you don’t really feel like it, your entire mood starts to change as you study God’s word. The word I studied today was exactly what I needed to hear as I prepare for 2025.

I won’t say too much more, let’s just dive in!

SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 21, verse 31
"The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but deliverance is of the Lord."

OBSERVATION

This verse beautifully illustrates the relationship between human responsibility and God’s sovereignty.

1. Man’s Part: Preparation
   The first half of the verse emphasises the importance of preparation: “The horse is prepared for the day of battle.” This teaches us that we must do our part - make plans, work committedly, and take action. For example:

   • If you're preparing for an exam, study diligently.

   • If you're starting a business, research, and develop your skills.

   • If you're navigating a difficult season, seek wise counsel and take practical steps forward.
     Preparation is an act of faith. We can't be passive and say "God will deliver me so I will do nothing" - no, we must prepare and in doing so reflect our belief that God will bless our efforts. James 2:26 reminds us, “Faith without works is dead,” showing that living faith is accompanied by action.

2. God’s Part: Deliverance
   The second half of the verse reminds us that no matter how much we prepare, the outcome is ultimately in God’s hands. Deliverance, victory and good success come from Him. Psalm 127:1 says, “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain.” Similarly, Proverbs 16:3 tells us, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.”
   This balance is crucial. While preparation is our responsibility, we must also surrender the results to God and trust His promises, such as:

   • Deuteronomy 20:4: “For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.”

   • Isaiah 41:10: “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

   • Psalm 34:17: “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles.”

This verse 31 reassures us that we don’t need to worry about the "if" of deliverance. It is a matter of “when”, because God’s word can not lie. Our role is to stand firm on God's promises, act in faith, and trust Him for the outcome.

APPLICATION

• I will approach the important goals and mountains in my life with intentional preparation, recognising that taking practical steps that align with God’s best for me is a demonstration of my faith in His promises.

• I will consciously surrender the results of my efforts to God, trusting that He alone is the source of true deliverance and victory.

• I will remind myself daily of God’s promises to deliver and guide me, using them as motivation to prepare faithfully and as reassurance that the outcome is secure in His hands.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for this wisdom that teaches me the balance between my responsibility and Your sovereignty. Help me to prepare for the plans ahead diligently in faith, knowing that my efforts are part of trusting You. At the same time, remind me to surrender the outcome to You, resting in Your promises of deliverance and provision. Strengthen my faith to stand firm on Your Word and give me peace in trusting Your perfect plan. In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🩷
